Hidden Gluten

Project Details

Audience: General Public

Technologies: 7Taps

Category: Microlearning

Materials Created: Script, 7Taps Course

Goal: Provide users with tools to identify gluten and follow a gluten-free diet

Gluten’s Sneaky Hiding Spots: How to Stay Safe” is a microlearning experience designed using 7Taps to help individuals new to a gluten-free diet or those struggling to identify hidden sources of gluten. The training combines engaging visuals, concise text, and interactive quizzes to enhance retention and user engagement. It guides learners through commonly overlooked gluten-containing foods, effective label reading techniques, and safe dining practices. Built with accessibility and practicality in mind, this project aims to empower users to confidently identify and avoid gluten in various scenarios, promoting better health and awareness.

Research and Design Development

When I was first diagnosed with Celiac disease, identifying safe foods felt like solving a daily puzzle. Beyond the obvious sources, I kept discovering new places where gluten could hide: dressings, deli meats, candy, even certain drinks. This ongoing need to research and double-check everything I ate gave me a deep, firsthand understanding of just how complex gluten-free living can be, especially for those just starting out.

That experience shaped the foundation of this microlearning. I drew from my personal journey and paired it with research from reputable sources to identify the most common hidden sources of gluten. From there, I structured the content around real-world situations and used backward design to ensure each section focused on clear, actionable takeaways. The result is a resource designed to be not only informative, but genuinely useful for people navigating the gluten-free transition.

Microlearning Creation

To ensure the content remained digestible and engaging, I followed microlearning best practices: short bursts of information, relevant examples, and interactive elements to reinforce key points. I crafted the experience in 7Taps, leveraging its mobile-first design to deliver an intuitive and accessible experience. Cards were carefully scripted to balance clarity, tone, and visual interest, while quizzes provided meaningful learner feedback and retention support.

Project Challenges

New Autoring Tool

This was my first time using 7Taps, and it quickly became one of the most enjoyable parts of the project. The platform’s intuitive interface and built-in constraints helped streamline my focus and encouraged clarity in both design and content. I loved the challenge of adapting my instructional design skills to a new format—and came away with a valuable tool I’m excited to use again.

Choosing What to Include

One of the biggest challenges in this project was narrowing down the content. Gluten hides in so many unexpected places that it would’ve been easy to overwhelm the learner. Since microlearning relies on clarity and brevity, I had to make thoughtful decisions about what to include, prioritizing the most common and high-impact sources of hidden gluten. It was a careful balance between being informative and staying concise, and it gave me great practice in distilling complex information into focused, actionable learning.
